Our Sleepy Head

Sometime last week...
So it was 8:00am and Grayce wasnt awake yet. Mommy actually got to sleep in a little bit! I woke up to go check on her. In the back of my head, I knew what must have happened because its happened before...

You see, Grayce has to be warm at night or she wakes up a lot. Understandable. But then you have the whole SIDS thing and the rule of "no blankets." Well, we've tried the sleepers, the swadlers, the really warm PJs. The result - my baby wouldnt sleep if she didnt have a blanket. She snuggles it, brings it up to her face in pure bliss and falls asleep. No blanket....legs kicking, rolling around, whinning, you get the picture. Shoot me down, but my "unprofessional" belief is that SIDS is a freak of nature that you cant necessarily prevent. I think it just happens - because physicians dont even know the cause of it. To make them appear more intelligent, like they are "on top of it," they come out with list of preventions. But per the Mayo Clinic and the AAP "There's no guaranteed way to prevent SIDS, but you can help your baby sleep safely." Now, I really feel they are targeting those with no common sense here. Those that throw a big pillow in the crib or a giant comforter that is heavy or a teady bear that is the size of a toddler and will trap them and suffocate them. This is not SIDS people...that is just plain dumb and its lack of common sense (which unfortunately a lot of Americans lack these days). Now I will say having a newborn is different, you have to be more careful because they are pretty helpless, but enough with the medical dissertation.

And speaking to those new moms out there - after enough sleepless nights, you will do whatever works to to get more sleep (within reason and the safety of your child). If the babe wants to cuddle a blankie to sleep better, go for it darling! You should of heard me before she was born - I was not going to do anything on the SIDS prevention list! No way! And then you start to make guilty confessions to other moms, and you realize they are doing just the same, its just this taboo subject that no one wants to admit to. No crib bumper?!?! I'd rather Grayce not bash her head against the hard wood of the crib as she rolls over at night and begins screaming bloody murder.

Ok so Im done with defending my position as to why I let my daughter sleep with a blanket, and 'gasp!' a teddy bear and her lullaby glow seahorse! So, back to my story...I walked into her room to find the following:

Dont worry, I made sure she was breathing before taking the picture! :) So mommy fixed the blanket, but it of course woke her up

Shes so happy in the morning, I love it :)

Funny thing about the teddy bear (and sometimes a monkey), I sometimes will find her with her arms wrapped around it, cuddling it like a baby. Its darling, I'll have to take a picture if it happens during the day and I dont have to wake her up with a flash in the middle of the night. Well, its time for Grayce's mid morning nap. Blanket and all :)

  1. I love this post. I do think some of the SIDS numbers are parents not admitting (or realizing) that the huge pillow in the crib with the baby might have had something to do with it.

We were careful when Wren was smaller but it's a total free for all now. I'm talking cabbage patch kid, stuffed doggie, second doll, two blankets, a taggie and two binkies. I'm sure it won't surprise you to hear that she loves playing in her crib after naps.

  2. HAHAHA Thank you for the "support" Eve. Just thinking back to how anal we were when she was newborn to now. But Im sure part of that is she is more independent - she can roll over and get out of the way if she feels trapped. Much scarier when they are newborns!
